Those who recall O'Hanlon chiefly as a jolly, swashbuckling anti-hero - the debunker of classical exploration literature - will encounter a rather darker side to the writer in this book. In which the chaos of the jungle has made way for a domestic heart of darkness. Through conversations which make for a blend of biography, travel writing and musings on biology/nature, a picture emerges of an exuberant, charismatic if sometimes troubled individual, the third generation of his family to be plagued by depression. Yet this remains a sensitive, light-hearted and funny book.
