The Study of political culture has emerged as one of the central organising concepts in political science. In conjunction with the study of institutions and leadership, it was particularly important in shaping our understanding of the politics of Communist states. But how useful is the concept of political culture for post- Communist politics? This volume brings together leading scholars in the field to re-engage with the concept of political culture in the light of recent theoretical developments in scoial science and to consider its empirical value in post-Communist conditions, where there has been great social and economic uncertainty and hardship, where state structures, ideology and even national identities have been undermined, and where, therefore, the role of political culture as a source of social understanding and action may have radically changed. These contributions point to the ongoing value of the concept as well as some specific limitations.
