The Archangel Cathedral

Standing on the very brow of Borovitsky Hill, the Archangel Cathedral is one of the most elegant buildings in the Moscow Kremlin. As far back as the thirteenth century, a wooden church allegedly stood on this site. The church was built in honour of the Archangel Michael - the celestial patron of the Russian princes on the field of battle. The white-stoned cathedral erected in 1333 become the main place of worship of the grand princes of Moscow. Grand Prince Ivan Kalita was buried there in 1340. For the next four centuries, the Archangel Cathedral was the necropolis of the grand princes of Moscow and the tsars of Russia.
